Thomas Charles Taylor was born in Ashdon, Essex (Saffron Walden Q1-1883 4A:578),son of Charles and Emily TAYLOR (née AVEY).
1891 census...Aged 8, he was at Market Street, Fordham with his mother Emily TAYLOR [38], born Chippenham, sister Edith E [10] born Ashdon, brother Hugh [5] born Ashdon, sister Bessie A. [2] born Fordham and grandmother Elizabeth AVEY [82] born Chippenham. His father Charles TAYLOR [41] sometime a draper/grocer seems to be the married gardener lodging at Gwynne Terrace, Exning Road, Newmarket. 1901 census...Aged 18, a grocer's assistant, he was at "house and shop" Cock Street, Feltwell boarding with Frederick and Georgina SIER (draper/grocer). Frederick was Fordham born. His widowed mother was at Carter Street, Fordham with his sisters Edith Emily and Bessy Avey, and his grandmother Elizabeth Avey. 1911 census...He has not been identified in this census His mother and sisters Edith and Bessie were still at Carter Street, Fordham. CWGC have him married to R Taylor of 146 Westbourne Gardens, Bayswater, London. The pension card has his widow Rosette Matilda [8-8-1884] at c/o Messrs Ben Evans, Swansea. He enlisted in Reading, whilst resident in Swansea. He was usually Thomas Charles as a civilian, Charles Thomas as a soldier.
From the battalion war diary:- 6th Royal Berkshire Thursday 3rd May 1917 France, Reserve Trenches. 3.45a.m. - British attacked. 11.0 a.m. - Moved forward to sunken road W of COVEUL river between HENINEL & WANCOURT. 4.0PM - Moved forward through heavy German barrage to trenches in N30b & c . Casualties in moving through barrage 15 killed 23 wounded 2 missing. Bn HQ at N30b5.2. Bn now in close support to 55th Bde whose attack had failed and had withdrawn to old British front line. Quiet night. CWGC has 12 killed, Charles and one other the only ones with a known grave.
